Smith on subjects of military history, southwest, his experiences in the Philippines, South America, Nicaragua and elsewhere; contains a Philippine diary: parts I & II; a book describing the scheme of instruction for a cavalry regiment based on the scheme followed by 314th Cavalry; sketches on Cornelius Cole and his brother, General George W. Cole; personal and official papers of Cornelius C. Smith, Cavalry, 1890-1936; two of his ancestors of Civil War era, Senator Cornelius Cole of California and Colonel George W. Cole, of the 2d Colored Cavalry.

Biographical note: Cornelius C. Smith was born in 1869 in Arizona Territory into an Army family. He spent his early life at various military posts including Fort Huachuca and Fort Lowell. In 1890, he joined the Army and later assignments brought him to Arizona. He died in 1936. His son, Cornelius C. Smith, Jr., was born at Fort Huachuca in 1912 and joined the Marine Corps in 1937.
